Guide To Growing Citrus Trees
November 2, 2022 | Posted by | in Palm Cleaning, Tree Surgery
If you're cultivating citrus trees, you're probably wondering how you can maximise your fruit field. There's nothing better than enjoying the hard work of your labour - especially when it's plentiful! To help you get the most out of your citrus gardening, we've put together these handy hints.
Position In Your Garden
Citrus trees love the sun, and it's recommended they enjoy five hours a day for the best produce. Plant your trees in a north-facing, sunny and warm position. If you live in a cooler climate, grow your citrus trees along a sun-soaked wall, which will warm your trees with radiating heat. You could also consider bringing potted citrus trees inside during the cooler months. While citrus trees do like water, it's important water drains quickly without pooling around the roots. You can prevent this by digging a hole in your intended planting spot and filling it with water. If your hole takes more than half an hour to drain, your drainage isn't performing at its best. You can correct the problem by heaping the soil into a mound, or by choosing another spot.
Growing Your Trees
Citrus trees thrive on sunshine, healthy and well-draining soil, occasional deep watering, airflow, and seasonal feeding. In cooler climates, plant your trees during the spring months when the soil is warmer. If you live in a warm area, you can plant your trees in autumn. Consider boosting your soil with cow manure, blood and bone, potash, or garden lime to encourage growth. Food also helps - start off with 200 grams of plant food and increase the amount as your trees grow.
Plant your trees at most 1.5 metres apart, 30cm away from your fence. If you want to plant your citrus in a pot, make sure you choose pots of a large size and use a great potting mix. Make sure you prune the roots at least once every three years.
Pruning
Pruning isn't required to get your trees fruiting, but they may need a prune to fit within your backyard. If your tree's old, you might need to prune significantly every five to ten years.
